Thoracic aortic disease is often a condition diagnosed after an emergency. However, Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital – Plano uses advanced technology and imaging techniques to detect thoracic aortic disease earlier in the disease process. This makes prompt diagnosis possible, resulting in early treatment and intervention before a potentially life-threatening emergency such as a thoracic aortic dissection.

Our Thoracic Aortic Disease Center multidisciplinary team (including surgeons, a medical geneticist, and vascular medicine specialist) provides guests with expertise in both emergent care and chronic medical management of a number of thoracic aortic conditions:

  • Thoracic aortic aneurysms
  • Thoracoabdominal aneurysms
  • Acute Type A and B dissections
  • Penetrating aortic ulcers
  • Intramural hematoma

We are pleased to offer minimally invasive thoracic endovascular aneurysm repair (TEVAR) as an effective treatment option for thoracic aortic disease. TEVAR often means fewer complications and a quicker recovery than an open approach to aneurysm repair.

In fact, due to our success and experience using TEVAR, we are a premier training site for Medtronic’s standard TEVAR course. We have trained physicians from more than 20 states in advanced TEVAR tools and techniques.

Thoracic Aortic Health Management

The Thoracic Aortic Disease Center is about more than just quality surgical interventions. We offer a full range of services in a highly specialized setting. The center is able to offer guests options by:

  • Reducing the number of patients requiring surgery
  • Enhancing medical management prior to any surgery that may be needed
  • Offering expanded surgical options for guests that may include a less invasive approach
  • Helping to decrease emergency events and reduce complications from thoracic aortic disease
  • Improving both the quality of life and long-term results of treatment
  • Counseling patients with aortic aneurysm dissection familial tendencies, such as Marfan syndrome and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome
