The Heart Valve Center of Texas, we provide expertise for both interventional and surgical services. Interventional procedures are often preferred, as they are minimally invasive, and usually require less recovery time, and pose less risk of complications. In some cases, traditional surgery may be the best treatment option. However, some patients may not be able to undergo traditional surgery for reasons such as advanced age, poor physical health, or the effects from other illnesses or disorders. For patients at high risk for open heart surgery, Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) provides a newer alternative to open heart surgery for replacing a narrowed aortic valve.
TAVR is appropriate for patients with:
TAVR is a minimally invasive procedure that does not require heart-lung bypass. To perform TAVR, the physician inserts a catheter through an artery in the groin (transfemoral). Using special x-rays, the surgeon guides a balloon catheter with an attached compressed replacement valve inside the aortic valve. When the compressed valve is in the correct position, the physician inflates the balloon to open the compressed valve to keep it in place. The balloon is then deflated and removed.
The multidisciplinary team at The Heart Valve Center takes a collaborative effort to see that you receive quality treatment and follow-up care.
If you have a heart valve condition and think you may be a good candidate for the TAVR procedure or if you have other forms of heart disease and are interested in what clinical trials are available, talk to your physician or cardiologist about a referral to The Heart Valve Center of Texas.
