The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano is here for you and your family during difficult times. If you or a family member has a serious or life-limiting illness at any stage, you can turn to The Heart Hospital for physical and emotional support. The Heart Hospital offers a wide range of palliative care services to support you and your family during a time of need.
The goals of palliative care are to improve quality of life through symptom and pain relief, as well as provide emotional support and disease management for you and your family. The palliative care team partners with you to diminish your stress, anxiety, and depression in the face of serious illness.
Many people with life-limiting illnesses can benefit from supportive and palliative care services, including those with:
Palliative care is different from hospice care in that it is for anyone with a serious illness at any stage. Palliative care can serve as supportive care even when you are undergoing treatments that are working to cure you, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy, while hospice care is for terminally ill patients who are no longer receiving curative care. Supportive and Palliative Care services can serve as a bridge to hospice care, to help you or your family member prepare for the next stage of an illness.
The palliative care team at The Heart Hospital serves as an advocate guiding you to appropriate medical care. We partner with you to enhance communication and support for you in the sometimes bewildering array of medical issues that you are going through. Supportive and palliative care may be appropriate whether you have just been diagnosed, are undergoing active treatment, have completed therapy, or are nearing end of life. Palliative care does not take the place of your regular treatment; palliative care works in tandem with your regular treatments and with the specialists coordinating your care.
Palliative care services take a consultative and team approach. The multidisciplinary team is led by a board-certified palliative care physician working with advanced practice nurses, social workers, pastoral care, and child-life specialists with experience and training in palliative care. The child-life specialists offer counseling that is unique to the North Dallas area. These specialists counsel children to help explain a parent or grandparent's illness and work with the children to help them emotionally cope with the illness.
The Supportive and Palliative Care services include:
Although a large part of the palliative care services are hospital (inpatient), The Heart Hospital also offers outpatient services.
