Recent NewsTHE HEART HOSPITAL BAYLOR PLANO EARNS THE HIGHEST NATIONAL RANKING FOR CARDIAC SURGERY SERVICESTHE HEART HOSPITAL receives a three star rating for quality from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons PLANO, TEXAS (June 22, 2012) — THE HEART HOSPITAL Baylor Plano has proven itself a top leader in cardiac surgery services earning a coveted three star rating for quality outcomes from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) National Cardiac Database. THE HEART HOSPITAL'S cardiac and thoracic surgery program is ranked among the top 3.2% in the country for aortic valve replacement (AVR) procedures and the top 14% in the country for coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) for 2011. "The three star rating is based on quality performance in patients undergoing CABG and AVR," says Michael Mack, MD, FACC, medical director of cardiovascular surgery for Baylor Health Care System and cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon on the medical staff at THE HEART HOSPITAL Baylor Plano. "It is a culmination of all our efforts to achieve excellence in outcomes since we opened in 2007." The Society of Thoracic Surgeons developed a comprehensive rating system for the quality of cardiac surgery among hospitals across the country. The STS database measures outcomes on over 95% of the 1,100 cardiac surgery programs in the U.S. Approximately 12-15% of hospitals received the "3 star" rating, which denotes the highest category of quality. In the current analysis of national data covering the period from January 1, 2011 through December 31, 2011, the cardiac surgery performance of the hospital is established in the highest quality tier, thereby receiving an STS three star rating. The system analyzes many different national cardiac surgical data categories on a yearly basis to determine which hospitals meet its stringent qualifications for the three star rating. This data includes avoidance of mortality, avoidance of major complications, use of arteries as bypass grafts and assuring that all appropriate medications are given pre and post operatively in all patients undergoing CABG and AVR procedures. "At THE HEART HOSPITAL we continue to build a foundation on quality and medical excellence," says Mark Valentine, president, THE HEART HOSPITAL Baylor Plano. "Achieving this high honor reaffirms our commitment to positive patient outcomes through evidence-based care processes while continuing to provide safe, quality, compassionate care." The hospital has received numerous awards and recognition for its medical innovations and quality in patient care including five-time Press Ganey® Summit Award® acknowledgement for Inpatient and Emergency Department satisfaction, The Joint Commission's Top Performer in Key Quality Measures, Accredited Chest Pain Center with PCI by the Society of Chest Pain Centers, The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval™ for Advanced Heart Failure, Aetna Institute of Quality for Cardiovascular Care, The Joint Commission's Certification for Ventricular Assist Device, Texas Health Care Quality Improvement Silver Award by the TMF and Becker's Hospital Review's `Top 50 Hospitals with the Best Patient Ratings' for quality.
