Open Heart Surgery

At THE HEART HOSPITAL Baylor Plano, our cardiac surgeons perform hundreds of open heart surgeries each year, including:

• Coronary artery bypass graft (also called CABG or heart bypass) surgery
• Heart valve replacement and repair
• Repair of heart problems that have been present since birth (congenital heart defects)

Some of the newer heart surgery techniques, pioneered by the surgeons on our medical staff, minimize complications.

Today, many open heart surgeries can be done with beating-heart or off-pump surgery, eliminating the negative effects associated with stopping and restarting the heart. Additionally, our surgeons often use arteries located in your chest (internal mammary arteries) for CABG surgery rather than using a vein from your leg. Because these arteries are more robust than veins, they provide better long-term outcomes for your heart conditions.

Our surgeons also pioneered the Ross procedure, a type of valve surgery, for treating aortic valve disease in very young patients. Our team regularly trains surgeons from across the United States and internationally through programs held at THE HEART HOSPITAL Baylor Plano.
