Hand Hygiene/Health Care Acquired Infections

July 2009 to May 2010

Quality Indicator The Heart Hospital NATIONAL State of Texas Rationale
Appropriate Hand Hygiene 93.9 * 63 76 Hand hygiene is the best way to prevent the spread of infection. Healthcare workers historically have not done well with hand hygiene compliance. With strong education and initiatives centered on improvement, compliance rates can be improved dramatically.
Infection rate acquired while in the hospital 2.82 # # Hospital acquired infection rates are calculated using the number of infections divided by the number of patient days and multiplying by 1000. This gives a rate of how many infections occur per 1000 patient days. This gives healthcare an even comparison of facilities of different sizes.

* - Indicates higher performance than the National & State Averages
